The City Council grants building permit to Mercadona to settle in Valterra

The Governing Board of the Arrecife City Council has authorized this Wednesday the granting to the company Mercadona of a license for construction of a commercial premises in Valterra. The surface will occupy about 1,500 square meters, in a building with two floors, a basement and 234 parking spaces, with entry and exit of vehicles through different streets.

The validity of the permit is two years, although the installation is expected to open its doors next year. The Arrecife City Council has received nearly 158,000 euros as a fee for the license.

"The government group can only feel satisfied. Firstly, for completing a file that was already started. But also, we are addressing a citizen demand, thus responding to day-to-day issues that are of concern to our neighbors," said the Mayor of Arrecife, Manuel Fajardo Feo.

In his opinion, the magnitude of the work could involve companies from the island, "with the consequent benefits for the population, so in need of an economic boost." In that sense, the Deputy Mayor, José Montelongo, hopes that Mercadona will turn to the Lanzarote labor market to supply its staff and employ the residents of Arrecife.

"In addition, the commercial firm has shown interest in settling in other neighborhoods of the city, which will benefit from the activity generated by these large areas," said the councilor.

Finally, Mercadona has given up on locating in Altavista II, where there are currently large stores such as Ikea or Lidl. The company is still interested in settling in Action Unit Number 12 of Argana Alta.
