The Cabildo of Lanzarote has incorporated, in the ordinary plenary session held this Friday, 10 million euros from the surplus to the budget for the year 2024. In this way, the accounts of the Island Corporation are further reinforced, which is the highest in the history of this institution.

It should be remembered that last August, in the extraordinary plenary session held in the Cabildo of Lanzarote, the Economic Financial Plan of the Island Corporation was approved, which was sent to the Vice-Ministry of Finance and International Relations of the Government of the Canary Islands. In this document, approved by the Regional Executive, the possibility of including 10,000,000 euros from the treasury surplus in the budget for the year 2025 was established.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, highlighted that this agreement reflects "the firm will of this government group to reinvest the surplus in projects that have a direct impact on citizens." "Our obligation is to put this surplus at the service of those who need it most and in areas that define the present and the future of the island," said the president.

For her part, the vice president and Minister of Finance, María Jesús Tovar, stressed that "with this step we reinforce our commitment to a responsible, transparent and efficient management model, which guarantees that every euro of the Cabildo is used to improve the lives of the people of Lanzarote and Graciosa." "We are talking about more social and healthcare places, greater security, more support for sports, more and more impetus for the primary sector. In short, more investments for the island," she added.

Specifically, in the area of Social Welfare of this institution, 2 million euros are allocated to the Diocese of the Canary Islands for the creation of a new care center for the most vulnerable population in Arrecife. Likewise, the Lanzarote Foreign Promotion Society (SPEL) will have 4.2 million euros to reinforce Lanzarote's presence in the main issuing markets and consolidate the organization of sporting and cultural events that contribute to economic revitalization.

On the other hand, the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium is a very important body for the Cabildo of Lanzarote, so this surplus allocates 635,000 euros to the Consortium to reinforce coverage of La Graciosa, guarantee surveillance on beaches such as La Garita, Guacimeta and the eighth island itself, and maintain the provision of ambulances in Tinajo and Teguise.

The Corporation's Physical Activity and Sports area will have more than 300,000 euros, which will allow it to promote competitive concurrence programs, support historical clubs on their anniversaries and reinforce the commitment to Canarian wrestling, allocating 95,000 euros to the Island Federation to promote the youth academy and ensure the future of the vernacular sport.

For its part, the primary sector will receive 100,000 euros through the Regulatory Council of the DOP Vinos de Lanzarote to combat the phylloxera plague, in addition to an additional 70,000 euros for promotion and training linked to the designation of origin. Specific aid is also included for the island's farmers and ranchers, which will be channeled through the town councils, with 40,000 euros for Teguise, Tinajo and Tías and 10,000 euros for the rest of the municipalities.
