MINUTO SILENCIO VICTIMA VIOLENCIA DE GÉNERO (3)

The Cabildo of Lanzarote observed a minute of silence this Monday on the facade of the island institution in repudiation of the confirmation of a new case of gender-based violence in the Canary Islands. The victim is a 43-year-old woman, allegedly murdered by her partner on January 5th in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

According to data confirmed by the Ministry of Equality, there were previous complaints of gender-based violence against the alleged aggressor. The woman leaves behind two orphaned minors.

The event was attended by the president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, the vice-president of the Corporation, María Jesús Tovar, and the Minister of Equality, Marci Acuña, along with councilors, and staff of the Institution who wished to join this gesture of condemnation and remembrance.

After the minute of silence, President Oswaldo Betancort stated that each sexist murder is a collective failure and an extreme violation of human rights, and recalled that "this crime in the Canary Islands adds to the one that recently occurred in Jaén, which shows that gender-based violence continues to be a present reality throughout the country and demands a firm response from public administrations".

For her part, Vice President María Jesús Tovar recalled that gender-based violence is a social problem that requires a coordinated, firm, and sustained response over time, and insisted on the importance of early detection and institutional support
