The Cabildo of Lanzarote has assisted 739 victims of gender violence this year

This Monday, the institution observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims of gender violence.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, led this 25N the minute of silence held next to the facade of the Institution, in memory of the victims of gender violence, and together with the rest of the councilors, councilors, workers of the Island Institution. Betancort insisted on the need to promote efficient measures that through education can combat this scourge. "We, from the Cabildo, will continue to make the necessary efforts to prevent these crimes and ensure the protection of women, boys and girls affected," said the president this International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women; also making a call to people who suffer abuse silently to raise their voices and report it.

For his part, the vice president of the Cabildo, Jacobo Medina, stressed how important it is to "continue demanding not only improvements in the laws to protect women and continue working together all public institutions to end this social scourge, but we must also create social awareness with the ultimate goal of, someday, stop celebrating this day." Medina also took the opportunity to recognize the work done by the Island's Social Welfare and Inclusion Area in the protection of victims.

The Minister of Social Welfare and Inclusion, Marci Acuña, has invited citizens to participate in all the events organized around this date. He recalled that so far in 2024, a total of 739 people have been attended to in the various resources that the Cabildo of Lanzarote manages to combat gender violence and protect women, boys and girls affected, a work that has in the associations of the Third Sector "an indispensable ally".

117 victims housed in housing resources

"Of the cases attended from the Comprehensive Women's Care Center, a total of 117", continues the counselor, "required admission to one of the accommodation centers for victims of gender violence. This figure includes both women and minors."

Marci Acuña has especially lamented the "unacceptable and heartbreaking" number of femicides in our country. "We have to shout loud and clear that this social scourge has to end. Fighting gender violence is a task in which we must all work. This November 25, from the Cabildo of Lanzarote we join the message of recognition, tribute and accompaniment to all women, boys and girls who are victims of gender violence, to those who are no longer here and to all the survivors," he concluded.

Around 25N, the Institution chaired by Oswaldo Betancort has launched special initiatives, such as theatrical sessions of therapies for behavioral change developed in schools, with the aim of preventing sexist behaviors among students. This afternoon, in addition, the Cabildo of Lanzarote invites citizens to join the traditional popular demonstration that will tour the area of Calle Real, in Arrecife.
