The Cabildo of Lanzarote has stated in the General Commission of Island Councils, held last week in the Parliament of the Canary Islands, its position on the approval of the urgent modification of Law 13/2007, of May 17, on the Regulation of Road Transport of the Canary Islands.
Specifically, the Institution has requested, in defense of the island's Transport sector, that point three of the First Transitory Provision of Decree Law 6/2024, of July 31, of this urgent modification approved by the Chamber, be changed so that in those municipalities that have initiated the procedures for increasing Taxi Licenses, prior to the publication of Decree-Law 6/2024, of July 31, the suspension of granting new taxi authorizations is not applied.
In the words of Councilor Samuel Martín, present in this forum as representative of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, "the Executive has been sensitive to our allegation, with which we avoid that the licenses currently in process are paralyzed for a year until the procedure is resolved. We have thus collected the commitment of Councilor Pablo Rodríguez to support our proposal, because we cannot allow procedures already advanced in municipalities such as San Bartolomé, Tías or Yaiza to be paralyzed. We support these legal improvements, but they cannot affect the measures already adopted to modernize the taxi service in Lanzarote", Martín explained.
Do not stop licenses already processed
Specifically, the Cabildo of Lanzarote has requested that the suspension of granting new taxi authorizations not be applied to municipalities such as Yaiza, San Bartolomé and Tías, where the procedures for increasing taxi licenses are already advanced, a process prior to the publication of Decree-Law 6/2024, of July 31.
Domingo Cejas, Councilor of the Area of Transport and Mobility of the Cabildo, has clarified that his department has issued in recent months favorable reports to the increase of municipal Taxi Licenses demanded from the municipalities of Yaiza (09/19/2023), San Bartolomé (04/24/2024) and Tías (07/17/2024). "Likewise", Cejas detailed, "the opportune Taxi Tables were held, with favorable reports regarding this increase and the need to enable these licenses. The mediation of the Cabildo before the Government of the Canary Islands will now allow them to move forward".
It should be noted that this regional document approved in transport matters promotes a set of environmental and sustainability measures with which it is intended to adapt the regulatory system to European guidelines. In fact, the regulations will provide tools to the island councils and municipalities to authorize or deny licenses for VTC or taxi vehicles, taking into account certain criteria, such as air quality or the load capacity of the roads.
