The Plenary of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has approved, in the extraordinary session of this Thursday, the initial General Budget for the fiscal year 2026, which amounts to a historic figure of 221,114,397.67 euros in its own budget and raising the consolidated to 289.7 million euros, including dependent entities.
The president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, assured that the approval of these accounts “is great news for Lanzarote and La Graciosa” and that it responds to "an effective management model, thus abandoning the inherited model of neglect". “We are facing a budget designed so that every euro reaches the homes of our residents through better services, more housing, and excellent social care: accounts that also include concrete measures to alleviate the terrible state policies that negatively affect the population due to an inoperative central Government without a budget”, the president asserted.
For their part, the vice president and Minister of Finance, María Jesús Tovar, who outlined in the plenary hall the main axes on which this budget was divided, congratulated the human team of the Finance and Contracting area "for the excellent work done in the preparation of these accounts". "We are facing historic and real accounts, which directly respond to the demands of our neighbors and which, as we have demonstrated in previous years, we will be able to execute".
Housing, Transport, and Primary Sector, keys to the budget
Tovar highlighted the extraordinary investment effort in key areas such as Housing, which is experiencing historic growth of 369% to reach 7 million euros, or the Social Welfare area, which with an allocation of 50 million euros consolidates the "Island of Care".
On the other hand, the Primary Sector receives a boost of 10 million to support farmers, ranchers, and fishermen; while the Water area is strengthened with 6.18 million in own funds to renew supply networks and hydraulic resources.
Furthermore, another of the key areas of this budget is that of Transport and Mobility, which takes a qualitative leap with 12 million euros to guarantee free travel and territorial connectivity, which translates into 161% more than last year.
Sports, Works, and Security, always a priority
Furthermore, the area of Physical Activity and Sports grows to 5.8 million to foster talent and healthy habits in all of society, also consolidating competitive funding grants in these accounts.
Likewise, the vice president highlighted that this budget is the result of prudent economic management that allows financing large projects while maintaining a positive net savings and fulfilling the commitment of loyalty to the seven town councils through the Municipal Cooperation Plans, endowed with 6.3 million euros, also recalling that last year this amount was allocated to the construction of the Tahíche Senior Residence with the consent of the seven municipalities.
Just as announced with the agreement in the Governing Council last week, the breakdown of the accounts reflects a strong commitment to the modernization and improvement of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
In terms of Security, the Security and Emergencies Consortium sees its operational capacity reinforced with 9 million euros allocated to staff expansion and infrastructure improvement.
Areas such as Public Works, with 15.2 million, or Energy, which grows by 50% to lead the ecological transition; as well as almost 5 million euros for the Culture area certify that Lanzarote and La Graciosa are moving towards a future of greater cohesion, sustainability, and well-being for all.
These accounts also bet on job creation with a budget exceeding 2 million euros, as well as in the area of Education for which this budget contemplates an amount that exceeds 3 million euros.
