The Cabildo Lanzarote has launched a social awareness campaign that focuses on individual responsibility to control coronavirus infections. It recreates different socioeconomic consequences that the island is suffering due to the spread of this disease. That is why it asks citizens for their collaboration, following the safety and hygiene recommendations established by the authorities and that "the good data of recent weeks does not distract us from our objective." Its dissemination is being carried out in digital media, print media, radio and social networks.

“We do not intend to enter into health matters, nor discuss the severity of the disease, we simply want citizens to be aware of what happens when the contagion spreads,” said the president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo.

"Thus, leaving aside the disastrous health consequences produced by Covid19, the key message of the campaign is that the more this disease spreads, the more society suffers economically and socially," they emphasize from the Corporation. For this, the campaign reminds that “When you infect” there are consequences such as "you scare away tourists", "you cause the closure of a company", "many jobs are at risk" or "you prevent our children from going to school."

This initiative refers to the consequences that Lanzarote is currently experiencing, particularly in tourism.

Economic consequences

"The pandemic has also caused local consumption to contract, since citizens have lost economic capacity and are afraid to go out. This has also led to the closure of companies and many people losing their jobs," they emphasize from the Cabildo

Parallel to its dissemination on radio and digital media, videos of real testimonies will be broadcast, explaining in the first person what Covid-19 is as a disease and the consequences of it. These will be broadcast on local televisions and on social networks. Therefore, this campaign requests the collaboration of society as a whole to "control the contagion curve and ensure that schools remain open, businesses prosper and tourists visit us."

Active infections

In a statement, the Cabildo de Lanzarote also wanted to "congratulate citizens for the latest effort made, which is being noticed in the decrease in the contagion curve." On September 7, Lanzarote registered almost 600 active infections and 320 infections per 100,000 inhabitants and 14 days. Currently the island has 144 active cases and the curve has dropped to 91 cases, being below the national average, which is 282, and below the Canary Islands average, 121.

"It should be noted that most of the people who contract the disease do so accidentally, so the campaign highlights the importance of maintaining the three major safety measures: mask, hand washing and social distance. In addition, it is a reminder that the fight against Covid19 is daily and we must develop it together, the entire society," adds the institution.
