The Cabildo of Lanzarote has expanded the educational offer and will execute improvements in the facilities of the Insular Center of Musical Education (CIEM) for the 2022/2023 course.

In order to improve the educational offer, the Cabildo has opted to extend the professional working hours of the teaching staff who are contracted part-time, so that the teaching hours are increased and there will be the possibility of taking on some 120 more students than before.

The Councilor for Culture, Alberto Aguiar, details that it has been approximately six years "since the last reform of the educational offer". “Our educational offer has always been scarce in relation to the demand of citizens. Thanks to these changes, we will be able to take on about 120 more students than in previous courses.”

“Every year we find ourselves unable to meet the great demand we have, so we decided to extend the professional working hours of the teaching staff who are contracted part-time,” says Aguiar. “This measure will partially alleviate the great demand for pre-registrations from the people of Lanzarote, achieving greater richness and breadth in the different specialties, which in turn will ultimately have an impact on the different groups and large projects of the center and on the culture of the island of Lanzarote”, adds the councilor.

In the specialties of double bass/electric bass, percussion, viola, cello, euphonium, trombone, horn and tuba, the educational offer of 16.5 or 30-hour days and half days will be expanded to full days. In this way, between 4 and 11 more teaching hours will be achieved for each instrument.

Reforms and improvements to the facilities

On the other hand, the Cabildo points out that the center will soon face a reform and improvement of the facilities. Firstly, it is proposed to improve accessibility, creating a small ramp at the entrance where there is a sidewalk more than 10 centimeters high.

Secondly, the Corporation proposes an action on the existing adapted toilet, condemning the existing hinged door that comes from what is called in plans as the Folklore Classroom. In this way, access to the adapted toilet would only be through the existing sliding door from the gatehouse.

On the other hand, the sink would be raised and moved to increase the space between it and the toilet, facilitating the movement and transfer of people with reduced mobility. Finally, the transfer bars would be changed places, since the longest one is located where there are no obstacles and the shortest one where there are.

Thirdly, the Cabildo proposes the execution of new toilets for teachers, increasing the capacity of the toilet with urinals and increasing the capacity of the existing toilet without urinals, among other actions to improve the quality and comfort of the center's toilets.
