The Cabildo celebrates 'Geodiversity Day' with almost a dozen presentations and a route through Lanzarote

The 'I Canary Islands Geoparks Conference' will take place on October 6 and 7 and will feature experts from all over the Archipelago

The Cabildo of Lanzarote will celebrate Geodiversity Day with the organization of the 'I Canary Islands Geoparks Conference', a project that will feature eight presentations and round tables and a route through several points of the Island.

The conference will take place on October 6 and 7 and will feature testimonies from experts from the Canary Islands, who will address topics such as the heritage of the Islands, the historical volcanic eruptions of El Hierro and La Palma, the socioeconomic effects of these phenomena and the challenges for the future in these areas, among others.

The Councilor for the Lanzarote Geopark, Samuel Martín, invites the public to attend these talks that will be held in the Assembly Hall of the Cabildo to "learn more about the past of Lanzarote and other islands", as well as "the vision of contrasted voices" in this matter that "will help us build bridges towards a sustainable future".

October 6 will be divided into two sessions. During the morning, the Professor of Geology at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), Jorge Mangas Viñuela, will lead the presentation 'The Geological Heritage of the Canary Islands and its relationship with the genetic model of the oceanic volcanic islands'. Next, the teacher of Geography and History of the ULL Carmen Romero Ruiz will give the talk entitled 'Geodiversity associated with the historical eruptions of the Canary Islands'. The Professor of the University of La Laguna (ULL) Ramón Casillas will then speak about 'The historical eruptions of El Hierro (2011-2012) and La Palma (2021)', and the Doctor in History José de León Hernández will end the session with the presentation 'The socioeconomic implications and effects of historical eruptions'.

In the afternoon session, the head of the Geological Mining Heritage Area IGME-CSIC, Juana Vegas, will give the presentation 'Geodiversity and the challenge of geoconservation as a basis for territorial development strategies'. A
Next, the geologist of the UNESCO World Geopark of El Hierro, Olaya García, will share with the attendees the talk 'Geodiversity and geoconservation: Local challenges from the geoparks of the Canary Islands. The case of El Hierro'. The Head of the Environment Service of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Reinero Brandon, will lead the presentation 'Geodiversity and geoconservation: Local challenges from the geoparks of the Canary Islands. The case of Lanzarote and the Chinijo Archipelago'. Finally, the day will end with a round table between the experts.

On October 7, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., a guided tour will be carried out by some of the specialists participating in the conference. This will be circular, starting in Arrecife and passing through Caldera del Cuervo, Montaña Colorada, Tinguatón and La Geria, to return to the capital.
