The Cabildo of Lanzarote approved this Friday morning a motion, proposed by the Socialist Group, to strongly condemn the violence in the Middle East. In this way, it showed its solidarity with all the victims of the conflict. At the same time, the socialists regret that Vox's negative vote did not allow the initiative to be approved as an institutional declaration.

In the motion, defended by the spokesperson for the Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Ariagona González, solidarity is shown with all the victims of these acts and their families, after the terrorist group Hamas launched a massive attack against civilian and military targets in Israel on October 7, 2023, and a escalation of violence began that has caused hundreds of deaths and injuries in Israel and Gaza with dimensions difficult to quantify and that has repercussions in the Middle East, with a significant risk of destabilizing the area.

The Socialist Group appreciates that the rest of the parties, with the exception of Vox, have joined the PSOE's request for an "immediate cessation of indiscriminate violence against the population, both in Israel and in the Gaza Strip", demanding the immediate release of the people detained in the framework of this conflict and calling for any act to be carried out within the framework of International Law and without affecting the civilian population.

Likewise, the text urges that all necessary diplomatic mechanisms be activated to avoid the loss of more innocent lives, ensure health care, humanitarian aid and coverage of all basic needs and rights of the civilian population, rejecting all unilateral measures that distance the prospect of the two-state solution, a key element for peace and security.

At the end of the motion debate, at the request of Ariagona González, spokesperson for the Socialist Group in the Cabildo, the entire plenary session dedicated a minute of silence for all the victims of the conflict. The PSOE of Lanzarote points out that it will also present this proposal in all the municipalities of the island.
