A total of 160 inmates live together in the Tahíche Penitentiary Center, with only 44 cells. This was stated by the central government yesterday in a written response to the question from the senator of the Popular Party (PP) for the island of Fuerteventura, Ana Padilla.
In its response to the question of the majorera senator, the Executive expands its data to the rest of the prisons on the Islands. It can be affirmed, therefore, according to these data, that the Lanzarote prison, initially built as a preventive headquarters for inmates, is the one with the worst ratio between the number of cells and the number of prisoners, with a proportion of 3.63 people per unit.
In fact, only the old prison of La Palma, El Trocadero, comes a little closer to the conejera average, with 52 prisoners for 16 cells (about 3.25 prisoners per cell), with the ratios enjoyed by the prisoners of Tenerife being very far away, with 1,357 inmates and 1,008 cells (1.34 prisoners per cell) and those of Gran Canaria, with 1,262 prisoners for a total of 723 units (1.7 inmates per unit).
