The Teguise City Council has announced that "before the end of the year" it will begin the execution of several projects that have been worked on jointly with the Contracting area of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, in order to materialize the financing received by the highest island institution,

Specifically, according to the City Council, the Cabildo has committed 1.8 million euros for works in various parts of the municipal district of Teguise, an amount to which must be added another 2.7 million obtained via European (ERDF) or Canary Island (FDCAN) funds, among other subsidies and own municipal investment. A total of 4.5 million that will be allocated to works of various kinds throughout Teguise and the island of La Graciosa.

“We appreciate the continuity of the Cabildo's Cooperation Plan at a time when administrations have to support each other more than ever to strengthen the socio-economic cohesion of the municipality of Teguise and the entire island of Lanzarote,” said Oswaldo Betancort.

“During the remainder of 2020 and also for a 2021 of reactivation, we must promote projects that relieve the economies of the self-employed and small and medium-sized companies of Lanzarote and La Graciosa in hard times in which we have to put all possible resources into said reactivation and achieve that desired return to normality, which will arrive when employability and the stability of families and their well-being are recovered,” added the mayor of Teguise.

Oswaldo Betancort applauded “the predisposition and coordination on the part of the departments involved, both from the Technical Office, as well as from Contracting and Works of Teguise and the Cabildo, to be able to unblock certain actions demanded by the residents of Teguise, and in whose specifications work has been carried out during 2020 in full confinement and in recent months with the aim of activating the economy of the municipality.”

Main initiatives

Among the main initiatives that will be launched in Teguise through this island financing, the Councilor for Works of Teguise, Eugenio Robayna, highlighted that “work is being done on projects such as a new multi-purpose venue for the elderly and young people in Tao, a playground in Muñique, a theme park at the Tahiche Tourism School, the legalization of the new Socio-cultural Center of La Graciosa; as well as lighting projects for commercial areas of Costa Teguise”.

Likewise, and thanks to the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Teguise and the Works area of the Cabildo will also be able to develop the heritage works planned, such as the restoration of the mill (which will conclude in a few days), the already announced rehabilitation works of the mill of the Villa and the paving of Ferretería street, and the renovation of the Socio-cultural Center of Los Valles; projects to which must be added the roundabout of the Punto Limpio and the sidewalk plan of Costa Teguise, as well as the incorporation of lights in pedestrian crossings of the main roads of Costa Teguise.

Works in tender from the City Council

In addition to inter-administrative collaboration, which "has intensified even more in times of Covid", the councilor Olivia Duque also wanted to highlight the effort in terms of contracting of the team of the area she coordinates, together with that of the Technical Office.

"They are immersed in the tender for a new paving plan in Tahiche, as well as enabling the old Tahiche school for the use and enjoyment of cultural associations, and on the other hand, proceeding with the installation of new solar streetlights in rural areas and acquiring new electric cars for the Municipal Mobile Park, which will be destined both to the Local Police and to the Social Welfare area,” he indicated.
