Teguise meeting with animal associations and shelters

The Teguise City Council has submitted for public consultation the initiative of the specific modification of the current municipal ordinance regulating the possession and protection of animals and the collection and stay of animals in municipal facilities. In addition, the City Council has urged the Government of the Canary Islands to speed up the modification of the Animal Protection Law and open the relevant period for allegations, in order to gather the opinion of the subjects and organizations most representative potentially affected by the future regulations of the autonomous community.

“To date, the law has not been modified, so the Teguise City Council, together with the municipality's society, has been evolving at the municipal level in favor of the defense, protection and welfare of animals, although there is still a long way to go”, says the councilor of the area, Sara Bermúdez,

In this regard, the City Council recalls that in 2016 it created a regulatory ordinance, updating the regulations in favor of zero sacrifice and converting the municipal kennel into an Animal Reception Center, "where the life of each of the animals housed is prioritized with action protocols for prevention and increased sanctions for offenders."

"This ordinance prioritizes responsible ownership and is, above all, protectionist with animals, but despite how advanced the current municipal ordinance is, it is necessary to continue improving it to regulate and improve the coexistence of animals in the municipality of Teguise, and solve with this consultation some problems that raise the colonies of cats and get to control their population through sterilization and encourage adoption as an alternative to sacrifice, in addition to also regulate the possession of potentially dangerous animals," adds the edl.

Also, the City Council itself urged the Government of the Canary Islands to improve the law as soon as possible to cover "certain protection gaps" suffered by animals today, and in fact, from the area of Sanctions and Animal Welfare, requests have already been made for changes and additions to the Animal Protection Law of the Canary Islands, in order to improve animal welfare and responsible ownership.

Citizens, organizations and associations that consider it so can send their opinions through the email bienestaranimal@teguise.es on the aspects raised until November 30, and also may submit their opinions in the General Register of the City of Teguise.
