The mayors of Tinajo and Teguise, Jesús Machín and Oswaldo Betancort, have decided to join in their claim to the Ministry of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands to solve the transport of high school students in their municipalities. The parents of more than 40 high school students from the institutes of Tinajo, La Villa and Costa Teguise have conveyed their discomfort, since their children do not have "preferential treatment" to obtain one of the transport places that the Ministry enables on the island of Lanzarote for students of Compulsory Secondary Education. Thus, despite living in rural areas, their children lack school transport; and also a regular public transport line.
Among the preferred students are those who are in 1st and 2nd year of ESO and live more than 2 kilometers from the center that corresponds to them, as well as those in 3rd and 4th year of ESO more than 5 kilometers away. However, in the case of high school students, as it is not compulsory education, they are "unable to take advantage of this public service, despite living in rural or remote areas, with the difficulty that this entails in order to move to each institute", they lamented from the Teguise City Council.
In the case of Tinajo, there are 14 students who do not have school transport and do not have a regular line to get to the IES of Tinajo, and in the case of Teguise, there are around 30 students who come from Soo, Muñique and Tiagua, who are studying Baccalaureate at the IES of Tinajo or at the IES of Costa Teguise, and also demand transport service.
They ask Education to take into account the "exceptionality"
In that sense, both Teguise and Tinajo, have asked the head of the Education area, Soledad Monzón, as well as the Island Director, Mario Pérez, "to take into account the exceptionality in which these students find themselves, since they do not fall within the parameters established by the Ministry and, therefore, have no way to access their respective educational centers".
"We understand that there are criteria for the allocation of non-preferred places, but we ask that the places be expanded so that these children are not left out, with the problem that this entails for those families", said the mayor of Teguise, Oswaldo Betancort.
