Technicians and firefighters from the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium will begin a "thorough urban speleology work" in the coming weeks to assess the condition of the branch of rainwater pipes that runs from Argana Alta to the Fishing School, located in the vicinity of El Charco de San Ginés. As happened a year ago, their work will once again serve to design the second phase of an action plan aimed at preventing the repeated floods suffered by the capital in the rainy season.
The start of this second phase of evaluation was announced during a meeting of the "Rain Incident Prevention" Monitoring Commission, which was promoted by the Security and Emergency Consortium in July last year and whose purpose was "the assessment and coordination of the work that was necessary to advance in the necessary solutions to avoid the negative consequences suffered by the capital of Lanzarote in times of rain".
At the meeting held this Friday, they also evaluated the actions that have already been carried out and that culminated with the completion of the project "Emergency Work on Actions in the Rainwater Network of Arrecife-Argana Alta" by the Autonomous Executive in the month of December.
"Exemplary level of cooperation"
In this sense, the accidental president of the Cabildo, Joaquín Caraballo, who presided over the meeting, highlighted "the exemplary level of cooperation that has existed between all the participants of the table, resulting in the profitability of some works that have allowed progress in solving the problems detected and in an agile way".
For her part, the Councilor of the Security and Emergency Consortium, Soraya Brito, wanted to publicly thank the work carried out by the fire department, "whose members were involved from the first moment to detect the main problems presented by the rainwater network of Arrecife, starting with Argana Alta, carrying out a thorough field work that has allowed to develop the actions as a matter of urgency, greatly improving the drainage situation in this area of the capital".
Now, according to what they have announced, they will start working on the second phase, which will reach the area of El Charco de San Ginés, "in order to establish the interventions that would be necessary and priority to undertake and thus avoid floods and other incidents that occur when there is heavy rain".
The works, without date
What there is not at the moment is budget or deadlines to undertake these works. According to the Cabildo in a statement, "once this work has been carried out and through upcoming meetings of the Rain Incident Prevention Monitoring Commission, the Cabildo of Lanzarote through the Security and Emergency Consortium will coordinate again the works that are necessary for this area of the city with all the administrations involved, including the Government of the Canary Islands, the Arrecife City Council itself, the Insular Water Council, the Lanzarote Water Consortium and Canal Gestión, among others, which are the members of the Table".
In addition, given "the good result" that they consider that this working table has given to coordinate the rainwater works in Arrecife, in the session of this Friday it has been used to invite the rest of the municipalities to participate in it, "in order that they transmit what are the needs and main problems that with respect to rainwater they have in their municipalities and use this same forum to give the feasible solutions".
