The socialist mayors of Lanzarote will bring initiatives to all municipal plenary sessions to demand that Oswaldo Betancort restore the Municipal Cooperation Plans, a fundamental tool to guarantee investment and territorial balance on the island.
The decision to eliminate these plans not only represents a setback in institutional cooperation, but also violates the provisions of the Island Councils Law, which obliges island corporations to guarantee an equitable distribution of resources among the municipalities. Suppressing these funds breaks with an effective and transparent collaboration model that allowed addressing real needs in each locality, regardless of the political affiliation of their governments.
The socialist formation has stated that "It is important to remind the President of the Cabildo that he governs for all the citizens of Lanzarote, regardless of the political affiliation of their governments. This measure does not punish the municipal governments, nor the mayors of the PSOE, but the citizens of San Bartolomé, Tías, or Haría, where the consequences will translate into a brake on development and less investment in essential services for the citizens."
The PSOE denounces that "The absence of objective criteria in the allocation of island resources opens the door to decisions marked by arbitrariness. Although Coalición Canaria is accustomed to governing by favors and cronyism, the law is there to be complied with, and the citizens of Lanzarote must be treated equally, wherever they live.
With the presentation of these initiatives, the socialist mayors demand that an unfair and unjustified decision be corrected, which weakens institutional cooperation, violates current legislation, and breaks with the principles of equity and responsibility that should govern the distribution of public resources.
