The San Bartolomé City Council has launched  a new educational project with the objective that all people have the same opportunities to participate and develop in equal conditions.

It involves the implementation of a pictographic adaptation system in all educational centers of the municipality, an initiative that advances in line with the motto ‘San Bartolomé we all play’, with which the municipality became a pioneer in inclusive leisure.

This project focuses on the improvement of cognitive and communicative accessibility through the use of pictograms, a key tool to facilitate the understanding of spaces, orientation, and movement of people in situations of functional diversity. At the same time, it represents an important social awareness effort from an early age.

The mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, has highlighted that “this project is one more step in our firm conviction that inclusion should not be an exception or a privilege, but a right guaranteed by the public sector. Betting on accessibility in educational centers is investing in a more just, more empathetic, and prepared society to coexist in diversity”.

Thanks to this initiative, all schools in the municipality will have pictograms that will signal the different zones and spaces of the educational centers. The work has been developed by specialist occupational therapists, who have analyzed each center individually to ensure that the signage adapts correctly to its characteristics, also maintaining a unified system throughout the municipality.

 Pictographic adaptation system

In this regard, the Councillor for Education, Estefanía Luzardo, has explained that “the unification of the pictogram system in all centers is fundamental, as it allows learning to be transferable. This greatly facilitates the adaptation of students in case of a change of school, reducing barriers and generating more friendly and understandable environments.”

In addition, the project incorporates an educational and multicultural approach, since each pictogram will feature its reading in Spanish and English, thus reinforcing bilingual learning and continuity with the educational projects specific to each center.

“We want our girls and boys to grow up in spaces where inclusion is something everyday, normalized and visible. Education is the foundation to build the municipality that we want to be tomorrow,” added Luzardo.

With this initiative, the San Bartolomé City Council reaffirms its commitment to equal opportunities and the creation of accessible environments, taking another step towards a municipality where all people can fully participate in social, educational, and community life.
