Puerto del Carmen's Avenida de las Playas will have a new bike lane and more parking spaces

The City Council will put out to tender in the coming days the "transformation" of the road, in the area of the Hotel San Antonio, Las Costas and Costa Luz Shopping Center, for 1.5 million euros

The Avenida de las Playas in Puerto del Carmen will have a new bike lane and more parking spaces

The City Council of Tías continues with the modernization and improvement of the public spaces of Puerto del Carmen and has now approved the execution of four new works destined "to enhance the destination of the largest tourist area of Lanzarote, remodeling several streets, a section of the Avenida de las Playas, and the promenade of Puerto del Carmen". The mayor of Tías, Pancho Hernández, accompanied by the deputy mayor and councilor for Tourism, Amado Jesús Vizcaíno, and the councilor for Urbanism, Saray Rodríguez, presented this Thursday these new actions, for which the Consistory already has the projects and public funding.

Hernández stated that he has already signed the decree authorizing the Contracting Office of the City Council of Tías to put out to tender the works for the remodeling of a section of the Avenidas de las Playas, in the area of the Hotel San Antonio, Las Costas and the Costa Luz Shopping Center. This action, with an investment of 1.5 million euros, will make possible "in this 2019" the transformation of an area of 15,820 square meters to modernize the section of the Avenida de las Playas between the streets Noruega and Avenida de Italia, in Puerto del Carmen.

With this work, whose tender will be inserted in the coming days in the Public Sector Contracting Platform, "a good change will be given with the construction of a new bike lane, more public parking spaces and the creation of green areas with plantations of exotic palm trees, whose roots are suitable for this urban section".

A 1.5 meter wide bike lane

The project for this section of the Avenida de las Playas, 650 linear meters long, and 100 meters on Avenida de Italia, has been developed by the technical engineer in Public Works Bernardino Curbelo, technical advisor to the Tías Projects Office, and will make it possible to order the section between Avenida de Italia and the streets  Suecia, Alemania and Noruega, "turning this road into a one-way street, doubling the vehicle parking capacity".

The work, which will be financed by the Tías Town Hall and the funds of the Cabildo and the Canary Islands Government via Fdcan, will allow this section of the Avenida de las Playas to be converted "into a single platform, where there are no differences in height between the areas for pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles". Throughout the section, a new 1.5-meter-wide bike lane will be created, which will be asphalted. Until now, in this sector of Puerto del Carmen, cyclists lack a bike lane between the area of Los Pocillos and Playa Grande.

The City Council recalls that this action, contemplated in the Modernization plans of Puerto del Carmen, acts in one of the sections of Calle Noruega where at the end of the road, next to the Rambla Islas Canarias, there is an action underway to execute a new urbanization with a building destined to Shopping Center of 10,500 square meters of surface, built on a plot of 15,000 meters. The execution of this urbanization will allow the City Council to receive, as a free transfer, about 8500 m2 of surface (in two plots) destined to green areas and playgrounds.

An "accessible" avenue "without architectural barriers"

This work of transformation of this section of the Avenue, where it is pointed out that there have been no previous public actions, is intended to be carried out "in five months" and according to the City Council will allow "to give a twist to the concept of urban intervention in the current Avenida de las Playas". The new work foresees the elimination of architectural barriers, making that section of the Avenue 100% accessible, giving priority to the pedestrian, differentiating the bike lane - which until now in the Avenida de Las Playas is part of the sidewalk and avenue - and providing more public parking spaces.

The mayor of Tías stressed that the commitment of the Government group is "to give priority to the modernization of public spaces where private initiative acts rehabilitating their complexes." "We have done it in the streets Pedro Barba, Nasa and Avenida Reina Sofía (where the luxury hotel La Isla y el Mar opened) and now we are acting in this area of the Pocillos and Matagorda axis," he said

Three million euros for the Matagorda-Pocillos axis

The mayor of Tías announced that another of the works that will be put out to tender this spring will be the improvement of the promenade between the beaches of Los Pocillos (continuation of this section of the Avenida de las Playas), from Calle Noruega to Calle Marte, in the Matagorda urbanization.

"Here, a new luxury hotel has recently been built (Lava Beach)", highlights the Consistory, which points out that in this sector a new phase of the improvement of the Plaza de las Naciones and the promenade in the surroundings of the hotels Jameos Playa, Riu Lanzarote Palace,  Lanzarote Village and Hotel La Geria will continue.

In this complex of the coast of Puerto del Carmen, about three million euros will be invested in two works with funding from the City Council, Cabildo, Government of the Canary Islands (through the Ministry of Tourism) and the Ministry of Tourism of the Central Government with a final item for works in these areas of the coast of Tías.

Tender for the Nautical Diving Station

For his part, the deputy mayor and councilor for Tourism, Amado Jesús Vizcaíno, said that the Cabildo of Lanzarote is finalizing the tender for the works of the Nautical Diving Station, authorized by Costas, with an item close to 750,000 euros from the Island Cooperation Plans and the Tourist Infrastructure Plans of Lanzarote. This station will be located in the area of La Pila de la Barrilla or Playa Chica.

Both the mayor of Tías, Pancho Hernández, as well as the deputy mayor, Amado Jesús Vizcaíno, and the councilor for Urbanism, Saray Rodríguez, stressed that "the injection of almost five million euros of public investments during this 2019 in these areas of Puerto del Carmen will revert to the modernization of the main tourist area of Lanzarote where the tourist and economic indicators known in recent times strengthen the leadership capacity of Puerto del Carmen as a mature tourist destination that has been able, with municipal actions and the rehabilitation of the complexes by private initiative, to reinvent and relaunch itself in the Canary Islands tourism industry".
