Tías has stated that it has become the first municipality on the island "to have an outdoor gym where the facilities are fully adapted for people with disabilities." And it is that, since last weekend, Puerto del Carmen has a circuit of adapted machinery for people in wheelchairs.
The mayor of Tías, Pancho Hernández, has highlighted that this initiative is part of "making Puerto del Carmen an accessible tourist destination," highlighting that, together with the recent adaptation of Playa Grande de Puerto del Carmen in accessible, with ramps, adapted showers and even a solarium for people with disabilities with an investment of 250,000 euros, the City Council has now installed, in the area of Playa de los Pocillos, near the Plaza de las Naciones, this biosafe circuit, where people with disabilities can practice outdoor activities and sports exercises.
The outdoor circuit is located on the promenade, on Los Pocillos beach. In the area, the Parks and Gardens area of the Tías City Council has also recently set up another biosafe park for people without physical limitations. The Consistory also points out that the parking area closest to this outdoor gym for people with disabilities, on Avenida de las Playas, includes spaces for vehicles of people with reduced mobility or the parking card for motor vehicles for people who have officially recognized the status of person with disability.
Facilities "that break down barriers to disability"
The popular mayor of Tías, Pancho Hernández, has highlighted that the planning of these facilities seeks to break down "the barriers that residents and visitors alike have on the island of Lanzarote for people with disabilities to practice physical exercises." "Having the same opportunities to practice sports is making a municipality and an island without barriers possible," he said.
The Tías City Council plans, in addition to this outdoor gym in Puerto del Carmen, to provide similar facilities in an area of the new Urban Ecopark that will be built in the municipality and that will be put out to tender this summer. These recreational facilities will be built on a large municipal urban plot next to the Tías Secondary Education Institute and the Amma Senior Residence.
