Playa Blanca will have a public parking lot

The Minister of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands, Rita Martín, visited the town of Playa Blanca this Friday, accompanied by the Minister of Tourism of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María José Docal, and by the mayoress of the municipality, Gladys Acuña, who informed the minister of the needs of the municipality.

The delegation witnessed the development of the works of an access that connects the bus station with the center of the town. It is the rehabilitation of a ravine with paving and recreation areas for children. A work that was proposed in September and whose completion is scheduled for June.

In addition, Rita Martín wanted to know "in situ" the needs and possibilities of the southern municipality, within a round of visits that the minister is making to the main tourist centers of the Canary Islands. "We have proposed a strategy for tourism improvement and rehabilitation for the years 2009-2013", explained Martín, emphasizing the importance of "comfort and quality for the tourist and for the resident".

In the specific case of Playa Blanca, Rita Martín highlighted the need to improve access to the town and the port, which includes "signage, beautification, landscaping, paving, spaces for leisure and a bike lane". In addition, the Minister of Tourism also referred to the need to improve the area of the avenue, where the commercial and restaurant area is located.

A NEW PARKING FOR PLAYA BLANCA

In addition to the accesses, the mayoress of Playa Blanca referred to one of the main problems currently suffered by the town: parking. Therefore, within the future projects, the possibility of building an underground public parking in Plaza del Carmen is being considered. "It would be a matter of raising the square, making a parking lot in the subsoil and making the area pedestrian", explained Acuña. This work will be financed by the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the City Council of Yaiza, in a proportion of 60, 30 and 10 percent respectively.

The improvement of lighting, street furniture and paving of the streets adjacent to the avenue are also part of the projects that the technical office of Yaiza will draft in the coming months so that the regional government can carry them out before the end of the year. "These are already budgeted works that had not been executed until now due to lack of a project", explained the mayoress.

In the meeting held this Friday between Acuña and Martín, the reorganization project for the port of Playa Blanca by the Dutch architect Van Berkel also came up. "It is about seeing what the ministry could execute within this 2009-2013 Plan", said the mayoress.
