Paulino Rivero has asked in his inauguration speech to "end the lawsuit and the tension", so he has asked "all political parties and social agents" to form a "common front in defense of the great issues of the Canary Islands" such as relations with the European Union, the Statute, the financing of the Canary Islands and the sustainability of essential services such as health and education".
The Canarian nationalist leader, who was appointed this morning as the new president of the Government of the Canary Islands in an act held at the headquarters of the Presidency located in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, appealed to "put aside the electoral echoes" and invited everyone "to do an exercise of memory and verify that Canarian politics has an important history of agreements".
Rivero said he felt proud of the work that "previous governments have done" and made a call to "get to work for the Canary Islands with all the tranquility" to "make us worthy of the trust of all". And "it will be in four years" when citizens decide "whether or not this was the Government that the Canary Islands needed", he added.
An emotional president, began his first speech as such making a very special reminder to his family and specifically "a brother who is especially missed in this room". And he continued thanking the outgoing president, Adán Martín, "for the immense work you have done during the last eight years", which he said will be the support on which "the achievements of the future will be based".
People, unity, trust, transparency, were the most heard words during a speech that lasted only about fifteen minutes. The new Canarian president made a strong defense of unity because only from unity can the Canary Islands "move forward". And he stated that "we are going to make it very difficult for those who try to make some islands fight against others", since trust and tranquility "take us away from the lawsuits to which we cannot dedicate more time because there is no time to lose".
Paulino Rivero was invested last Wednesday as president of the Canary Islands after the long negotiations that his party has held with the PP to be able to form a government in the archipelago. The regional elections of May 27 gave the victory to the socialist candidate, Juan Fernando López Aguilar, who, however, did not achieve a sufficient majority to govern alone.
Paulino Rivero, until now spokesperson for CC in the Congress of Deputies, is the president of this nationalist formation, but will leave the position due to its incompatibility with that of the autonomous Presidency and José Torres Stinga will replace him.
THE ROOM WAS TOO SMALL
The assembly hall of the headquarters of the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was too small to accommodate the numerous media, politicians and social agents who wanted to attend the inauguration of the new president.
There were all the ministers of the new government and those of the outgoing government with Adán Martín at the head. José Miguel Pérez, president of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and Jerónimo Saavedra, mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, who was accompanied by councilor María Bernarda Barrios. Román Rodríguez of Nueva Canarias and José Segura as Delegate of the Government of the Canary Islands also attended the event. Ignacio González and Lorenzo Olarte of the Canarian Nationalist Center, as well as Santiago Grisaleña of the Canarian Confederation of Entrepreneurs.
The great absentee was the leader of the opposition Juan Fernando López Aguilar, of whom members of his party initially said that he would not attend because he had not been invited, a matter that was denied by Adán Martín himself, the outgoing president.
