Parents' associations stand up to Education for delays in hiring substitute teachers

The Federation of APAS of Lanzarote has presented a document to the Island Education Office where it demands the modification of the current system of appointments and replacements of teachers. In the letter, the Association of Parents and Students expresses its discontent with the current system, since in some centers, substitute teachers do not arrive at the center in the recommended time.

According to the documents they have provided at the press conference they convened this Monday, the association has evidence of secondary schools where "students from different groups have been between 6 and 7 weeks without having the teachers assigned to the different areas", which means that students do not receive the school content planned due to the lack of a teacher. In addition, they denounce that "in most cases the students are alone in the classrooms or in the playground", with the consequent damage to the minors, who "are discriminated against in their training in relation to the state system".

The response from Education

Juan Lorenzo Valenciano, who currently replaces Juan Cruz in the functions of Island Director of Education, points out that the problem lies in the fact that the lists of teachers were created a year and a half ago, so of the people who signed up at the time, currently "not all are accessible when it comes to starting to work because they have other jobs". And as Valenciano explained to La Voz, the solution that has been given has been to reopen the lists, to create new ones.

The new creation of the lists of substitutes will entail a minimum waiting time of two weeks, since the candidates must be evaluated and placed on the lists in relation to their experience and the points they have. Thus, Valenciano hopes that "in two or three weeks the lists will be closed, and this will speed up the procedures for substitutions in the teaching staff".
