The Government Delegation in the Canary Islands has appointed Orlando Suárez Curbelo as the new island director of the General State Administration in Lanzarote, who will fill the vacancy due to the retirement of Carmelo García Déniz, who had held the position since September 2007.
Suárez Curbelo, born in Yaiza on December 27, 1950, is a teacher and has a degree in Law. He has an extensive teaching career, which began in 1974, when he was appointed interim official of the Special Corps of Teachers of E.G.B. at the "San Juan de Dios" Special Education Center in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Later, in September 1975, he approved his entry as a career official in the Corps of Teachers of General Basic Education. He has held various management positions in different public schools in Lanzarote.
He has also been a member of various committees of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, president of the School Council of the Canary Islands and a prominent director of the UGT for many years.
Very recently he has been granted the Encomienda of the Civil Order of Alfonso X el Sabio by the Minister of Education, Ángel Gabilondo.
Currently, he was developing his professional activity at the Blas Cabrera Infante Secondary Education Institute in Arrecife.
