Noda: "Fernando Clavijo shares the strategic matters of Yaiza that are of regional competence"

The Government agrees to widen the Yaiza - Playa Blanca road and accelerate the expansion of health and educational infrastructure and housing projects

The mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, has valued the good harmony between the Canary Executive and the southern City Council after this Thursday's meeting where they discussed finalizing projects that are underway and quickly addressing other essential initiatives for the well-being of the population. Noda pointed out that “Fernando Clavijo shares Yaiza's strategic issues that fall under regional competence, so I appreciate the president's willingness and that of his work team to attend to our demands with concrete solutions”.

Apart from discussing the present and future of the socio-health infrastructures, which they visited along with Government technicians after the meeting at the Casa del Camello in Uga, Fernando Clavijo and Óscar Noda spoke about the project for the expansion of the expansion, improvement, and tertiary system of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (EDAR) Playa Blanca. The president reported that the Government is authorizing a multi-year investment of 11 million euros to tender its execution before the end of the year.

Óscar Noda points out that “it is an ambitious project with a twenty-two-month execution period that involves the modernization of the Marcastell pumping station and other actions in sanitation and regeneration of wastewater suitable for agricultural use. The population has grown and the EDAR Playa Blanca is overloaded in its treatment capacity with almost double the flow rate and organic load for which it is prepared”.

Another essential matter for the municipality is the expansion not only of the Playa Blanca Health Center, but also of the Yaiza Clinic. The municipality has a total of 16,800 health cards, another reflection of population growth. Clavijo admits that land transfers in the Canary Islands are not easy due to territorial protection and bureaucratic procedures, however, he agreed with the mayor of Yaiza on a commission made up of technicians from both administrations to finalize the land transfer of the plot adjacent to the Playa Blanca health center in order to formalize once again the transfer under the terms now requested by Health, and to study in parallel an alternative to expand the Yaiza clinic, which would involve moving the funeral home elsewhere.

Education and housing

Canarias also shares the expansion of the schools in Playa Blanca, the most populated Primary school in Canarias, the expansion of the school in Uga, which demands a school canteen, and the expansion of the CEO Montaña Roja. The municipal commitment is to formalize the land transfer, the process for which is underway.

Regarding housing, the mayor asked the president to tender the construction project for the 136 houses on land ceded by the City Council, an initiative that could even be executed in phases, and to continue with the purchase of already built houses in the Los Ajaches residential area intended for affordable rent. Clavijo proposed a specific axis for housing within the resources of the Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN) "which will help the action programs of municipalities like Yaiza".

Duplication of the LZ-2

Óscar Noda conveyed to Fernando Clavijo the need to carry out the pertinent studies and include as an autonomous priority the expansion of the LZ-2 road, in its section between the population centers of Yaiza and Playa Blanca, considering the volume of traffic that this 11-kilometer route supports. Fernando Clavijo agreed to Yaiza's request, pointing out that "we also need the Cabildo to give us an answer so that we can include it in the annex to all the works to be financed in the Road Agreement with the State." This involves the improvement of the southern axis, which must be undertaken in phases given the complexities of two other road sections: IES Yaiza - Uga and Uga – Yaiza. Regarding roads and given the Cabildo's passivity, Óscar Noda asked Canarias for economic aid to invest in the repair of the Los Hervideros road. The sinkhole that prevents circulation is five years old and there are no signs of a short-term solution.

Femés Turrets

Faced with Yaiza's request for investment to bury the electrical lines affecting the town of Femés and its surroundings, the Canarian president was very clear: "we can commit money when the Cabildo signs the agreement with Red Eléctrica". Yaiza defends the landscape values and expects full understanding and investment commitment from all institutions, as the project to bury the 132-kilovolt transmission line, in the 7.2-kilometer section between the towns of Las Casitas and Femés, costs around 20 million euros.

Fernando Clavijo's visit to Yaiza concluded at the Timanfaya camel stable as a nod of support to the sector that the Government of the Canary Islands could endorse in an institutional gesture, as town councils in Lanzarote are doing at Yaiza's request, Óscar Noda announced.
