The Cardiology service of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has experienced an increase in its consultations of close to 36% so far this year. In addition, in recent months five new cardiologists have been incorporated to reinforce the team that currently has a total of thirteen specialists. This was reported by the hospital in a statement.
The professionals of the service have attended a total of 3,708 consultations and performed 3,298 diagnostic tests until May, figures that show a growth of 36% and 21% respectively compared to the previous year.
This increase in activity is in addition to the one already registered in 2024, when the Cardiology professionals of the Molina Orosa Hospital attended a total of 7,146 consultations and carried out 6,674 diagnostic tests.
Following this trend, the incorporation of the new cardiologists in recent months is key "to strengthen the service's response capacity, and continue to advance in the care and comprehensive approach to patients with cardiovascular disease".
On the other hand, since the launch of the Hemodynamics and Interventional Cardiology unit, the Molina Orosa also attends to acute cardiac pathology. In the first five months of the year, this unit "has carried out a total of 339 interventions, mainly related to the implantation of pacemakers and catheterizations", as they have pointed out.
The head of the Cardiology service of the hospital center, Martín García, highlights that the increase in both consultations and diagnostic tests and interventions is not only a quantitative fact, but also demonstrates the effort and commitment of the service's professionals to offer cardiology of excellence and answers to the problems of cardiac patients in Lanzarote, with the highest quality of care.
2,000 consultations in Primary Care
Of the total number of consultations attended by the service, 985 have been carried out in Primary Care through the figure of the case consultant specialist. This initiative, promoted by the Management of Health Services, aims to bring specialized cardiology care closer to health centers, improve patient accessibility, reduce waiting times and optimize healthcare resources.
The program was implemented in February 2024, initially in the health centers of Valterra, Titerroy and Puerto del Carmen, and has been progressively expanded to the centers of Costa Teguise and San Bartolomé, consolidating a care formula that allows the specialist to travel weekly to these points to attend to referrals of patients with suspected cardiovascular pathology and monitor cases.
Since the launch of the project thanks to the incorporation of ultrasound equipment to the Primary Care centers, and until last May, the specialists have attended a total of 1,983 first and subsequent consultations, providing a decisive response in their own health center to patients and avoiding travel to the hospital.
"An innovative, efficient and human model", according to the manager
The manager of the Health Services of Lanzarote, Pablo Eguia, considers that this care model combines interprofessional collaboration, technological innovation, and proximity to the patient, and represents a clear commitment to the humanization of health care and the efficiency of the public health system in Lanzarote.
