On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Cabildo of Lanzarote, through its Environment Area led by Councilor Samuel Martín - and in collaboration with the Environmental Education Unit - has celebrated the act of awarding the prizes of the Ideas Competition for the creation of the future mascot and representative logo of the Area.
The initiative has been aimed at Primary, Secondary and Baccalaureate students from Lanzarote and La Graciosa, and has had a high participation, gathering a total of 212 creative proposals: 143 for mascots and 69 for logos. Among all of them, 28 mascot ideas and 18 logo ideas were selected, with six of them being finalists - three per category - which have been recognized in the event that took place this Thursday in the Assembly Hall of the Cabildo.
The contest has had the active participation of five Secondary Education Institutes (IES Tinajo, IES Teguise, IES Playa Honda, IES Las Maretas and IES Blas Cabrera Felipe) and eight Infant and Primary Education Centers (CEIP Benito Méndez Tarajano, CEIP Alcalde Rafael Cedrés, CEIP Playa Honda, CEIP Playa Blanca, CEIP Los Geranios, CEIP Argana Alta, CEIP Alcalde Alexis Tejera and CEIP Ajei), thus consolidating a link between the educational community and the environmental awareness of the island, one of the primary objectives pursued in this matter by the Area managed by Councilor Samuel Martín.
Defend our valuable environment
The Councilor for the Environment, who was also accompanied by the Island Councilor for Youth, Aroa Revelo, thanked the students and teachers for their involvement in this initiative, emphasizing "the importance of environmental commitment from an early age and the role that the Area plays in the protection and conservation of island biodiversity."
The Assembly Hall was decorated with informative material about the natural heritage of Lanzarote, including several informative roll-ups about flora, fauna and landscape. In addition, the Institution's Environment agents have made a brief presentation to publicize their daily work on the island, highlighting the relevance of their figure as a key piece in the management and defense of the environment.
Finally, the prizes were awarded to the finalists, who in this edition have been selected under a pseudonym. The jury especially valued the originality, creativity and the implicit environmental message in each proposal.
