The mayor of Arrecife, Cándido Reguera, the first deputy mayor, José Montelongo, the councilor for Education and Sports, Paca Toledo, and the councilor for Culture, Eva de Anta, met on Wednesday morning with the new Deputy Minister of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands, also from Lanzarote, Manuela Armas.
The municipal officials informed the Deputy Minister of the conditions of the city's educational centers and the works being carried out in the summer months.
They also discussed the adaptation of their electrical installations to the new European regulations for the Nieves Toledo, Adolfo Topham, Titerroy and Capellanía schools, in response to which Armas pledged to send an Educational Infrastructure technician to assess the specific needs and evaluate their cost, within a foreseeable framework of collaboration between both administrations.
Other issues that were raised, as explained by the capital's first mayor, Cándido Reguera, "were the situation of school canteens, the future of the La Destila school, pending the conclusion of the legal term of the eviction file of the homes attached to this educational center, next November, to start the works, as well as possible lines of collaboration between the Vice-Ministry and the City Council".
Reguera also positively assessed this first meeting "which will undoubtedly serve to launch joint lines of work between the Government of the Canary Islands and the City Council, which will help to solve the deficiencies and shortcomings in the educational infrastructures of the municipality. The objective is for Arrecife to have decent and quality schools".
Improvement works in the centers
On the other hand, the Councilor for Education, Paca Toledo, highlighted that at
these moments improvement and care works are being carried out in the different Infant and Primary Education schools.
"The interior and exterior painting works, transfer of materials, repair
of bathrooms and plumbing or cleaning of gardens, among others, are being
executed by operators of Roads and Works and by personnel hired
through agreements with the Canarian Employment Service", explained
Toledo.
In this sense, Manuela Armas showed the willingness of her department to contribute to the improvement of schools, "because the quality education to which we aspire can only be taught in decent facilities".
