The San José Castle hosted this Monday the official presentation of Lanzarote's participation in the sixty-fourth edition of the emblematic Festa do Pulpo of O Carballiño, one of the most crowded and important gastronomic events in all of Spain, which holds the declaration of Festival of International Tourist Interest.

Present at the presentation were the president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort; the minister of the Centers of Art, Culture and Tourism of Lanzarote, Ángel Vázquez; and the acting mayor of O Carballiño, José Rafael Castro-Gil.

The president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, thanked the O Carballiño City Council for choosing the island as the protagonist of the 64th Festa do Pulpo. “It is a source of pride and emotion due to the close historical and human ties that unite both territories." Betancort highlighted that Lanzarote has been a land of welcome for numerous Galician families for decades, many from O Carballiño and other municipalities in Ourense.

Likewise, the president highlighted the role of gastronomy as an element of identity and a driver of development. In this regard, he recalled Lanzarote's commitment to a model that promotes local products and the work of farmers, ranchers, fishermen, winemakers, and chefs, linking territory, culture, and economy. “We believe in a gastronomy capable of generating opportunities for our people and projecting the authenticity of our destination to the world,” he stated, emphasizing that this vision has made Saborea Lanzarote a benchmark for enogastronomy both within and outside the Canary Islands.

For his part, the minister of the Centers of Art, Culture and Tourism of Lanzarote, Ángel Vázquez, assured that Lanzarote's presence in Carballiño “is the confirmation of a relationship based on mutual respect for culture, gastronomy, and traditions linked to the sea”.

“Lanzarote goes to Carballiño not only to show what it is, but also to recognize a way of understanding the product, the craft, and the celebration. Because when two territories share roots, what is built is not just a one-time presence, but a relationship with a vocation for continuity,” added the minister, who also highlighted the work carried out daily by the Association of Pulpeiros of Carballiño.

For his part, the acting mayor of O Carballiño, José Rafael Castro-Gil, assured that in Lanzarote and in O Carballiño “we understand gastronomy as a fundamental pillar of our identity, and that is why we treasure traditional recipes and the way of preparing our products”. “Generation after generation, we have taken care of the land and the sea and we have preserved culinary knowledge. Our dishes, our recipes, and our flavors make us unique, and we know that very well,” he stated.

The public event has served to institutionally announce that the island will be the main protagonist and the guest of honor at this year's edition, which will be held next Sunday, August 9, in this municipality in the province of Ourense, becoming an extraordinary showcase for the promotion of Lanzarote's culture, tourism, and primary sector in Galicia.
