The governing group of the Tías City Council, formed by PSOE and Unidas Sí Podemos, approved this Tuesday, with the affirmative vote of CC and the abstention of PP and Vox, the motion in defense of the landscape and against the indiscriminate implementation of photovoltaic energy that is contemplated in the map of Renewable Energy Acceleration Zones (ZAR) of the Government of the Canary Islands.
The mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz Saavedra, stated that “we are in favor of the installation of photovoltaic panels, but not just anywhere, but in an orderly manner and where they produce the least impact, such as the roofs and covers of warehouses or homes. We are committed to an island-wide and consensual agreement with all city councils to define the zones”.
The second deputy mayor and councilor for the Environment, Carmen Gloria Rodíguez, conveyed the governing team's rejection of the ZARs “having been delimited behind the municipalities' backs, affecting agricultural spaces, rural areas, and strategic landscapes for the identity and economy of Lanzarote”.
The motion also defended that renewable deployment must prioritize, before the consumption of rustic land and rural landscape, the use of already transformed and anthropized spaces, such as roofs, parking lots, industrial estates, and existing infrastructures.
Rodríguez declared that in Lanzarote, “the landscape is not decoration. The landscape is economy, employment, identity, and future”. Likewise, during the debate, the existing contradiction between European ecological restoration policies and the planning proposed for some ZARs was brought to the table.
“Europe demands that we advance in renewables, but also restore ecosystems, protect biodiversity, and recover territory. It makes no sense to talk about restoration while intending to industrialize part of the island's rural and agricultural landscape,” stated the councilor, who insisted that Tías defends a renewable model compatible with the territory and rejects the imposition of the Renewable Acceleration Zones.
ZAR in Tías
The ZAR maps, defined by the Government of the Canary Islands through the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy, foresee possible energy installations in areas scattered throughout the island's geography and, in the case of the municipality of Tías, places them both in the interior and on the coast.
It includes traditional agricultural soils of high landscape value, agricultural transition areas and rural zones in different points of Conil, Tegoyo, Mácher, Tías, Masdache, La Asomada and Montaña Blanca on its border with San Bartolomé.
It also affects the upper area of Puerto del Carmen, between Mácher and Los Topes, to the surroundings of the Peña del Asiento and Cortijo Viejo road, slopes towards the Tinasoria and Gaida mountains, area near the golf course and the road from Puerto del Carmen towards La Asomada.
Furthermore, it contemplates areas susceptible to hosting wind facilities in coastal zones such as the marine strip in front of Playa Grande and Matagorda, where the possible location of floating offshore wind turbines is foreseen, the maritime-terrestrial zone near Los Pocillos and Matagorda and the coastal area between Playa Chica and the Barranquillo rock.
