The PSOE of Lanzarote commemorated this Friday the tragedy of the Cruz del Mar through a remarkable press release. On November 28, 1978, this tragedy struck the island's fishing community and moved its entire population when the fishing boat Cruz del Mar was attacked in Saharan waters.
This event, considered an act of terrorism, left an indelible mark on the island and in the memory of its inhabitants. The Cruz del Mar was sailing in Saharan waters when it was attacked, resulting in the death of seven of its crew members; only three managed to survive, including Miguel Ángel Rodríguez García. That day marked a before and after for the families of the sailors and for the entire island.
In order not to leave this event in oblivion, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez García, together with other people from the island, continue, 45 years later, to carry out various commemorative acts. On the morning of this Thursday, he visited the headquarters of the Insular Directorate of the State Administration, where he was received by the insular director, Pedro Viera. "This visit serves not only as a reminder of the tragic event but as a tribute to the sailors who lost their lives and to their families, who still suffer the consequences of this fateful event today," he emphasized.
During the visit of Miguel Ángel and his wife, María Begoña Macías, the importance of "remembering and honoring the memory of the deceased so that events like this do not happen again and that the suffering of these men from Lanzarote is not forgotten" was recalled.
Pedro Viera recalled that "what happened with the Cruz del Mar is a painful reminder of the dangers faced by fishermen and the need to guarantee their safety at sea. Lanzarote continues to remember those who lost their lives in search of a livelihood for their families."
