Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-BC) congratulates and recognizes the society of Lanzarote "for the extraordinary citizen response demonstrated in the multitudinous demonstration held yesterday in the streets of Arrecife in defense of the Insular Hospital and in rejection of any attempt to close or dismantle this reference health center for the island".

From the Canarian party, they point out that "the massive participation registered (7,000 people according to the Local Police of Arrecife) constitutes an unequivocal demonstration of the commitment of the Lanzarote citizenry to the defense of public services and, especially, to a care resource that for decades has provided attention and care to hundreds of elderly and dependent people on the island".

From NC-BC, they make an "express recognition of the work and perseverance of the health professionals of the Insular Hospital, who have rigorously and responsibly defended the continuity of the center; to the families of the users, who have raised their voices to protect an essential service; and to the users themselves, protagonists of this demand, who have shown enormous dignity and strength in the defense of their rights".

"Saturday's mobilization represents a clear example that when essential public services such as healthcare and care are endangered, society responds forcefully, showing its rejection. Lanzarote has sent a clear message to public administrations, the citizenry is not willing to accept decisions that imply a deterioration of health and socio-health care nor the loss of fundamental resources for the most vulnerable population," they add.

NC-BC considers that, after this demonstration of unity and collective commitment, "it is now up to the Government of Canarias, presided over by Coalición Canaria (CC), to respond at the level of the social demands expressed in the street". "That response must be materialized in the allocation of a sufficient budget to undertake the comprehensive reform of the Insular Hospital building and in the presentation of a clear and binding calendar for the return of users to the center once their provisional transfer to the annex building of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital is completed," they conclude from Nueva Canarias.

The Lanzarote society has fulfilled its responsibility by defending an essential public service. Now it is up to the Government of the Canary Islands to listen, act, and guarantee the future of the Insular Hospital.
