Consortium Day at the Cabildo of Lanzarote

The Security and Emergency Consortium of Lanzarote held this Tuesday the conference on Natural Disaster Risks, a key meeting in improving prevention and response to adverse phenomena. The conference, held in the Assembly Hall of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, brought together emergency experts from different administrations to analyze strategies and share experiences in the management of natural disasters.

The president of the Security and Emergency Consortium of Lanzarote, Francisco J. Aparicio, highlighted the importance of this type of meeting "to strengthen the capacity to respond to catastrophes." "Security is not an issue that we can leave to chance. Lanzarote, as an island territory, faces particular challenges in terms of emergencies and the best way to face them is with training, coordination and foresight," he said. Aparicio also took the opportunity to highlight the work of inter-institutional cooperation: "The presence of experts such as the general director of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands and the chief inspector of Emergencies of Valencia reinforces the importance of inter-institutional cooperation to improve our capacity to respond to disasters."

For his part, the general director of emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Figuereo, highlighted "the importance of being prepared to face this type of catastrophe." "In a world increasingly affected by climate change, the risks of natural disasters are not only a future concern, but a reality that affects our days. We share a common commitment, to build more resilient communities, prepared and aware of the challenges that natural phenomena represent in our lives," he said.

The session began with a presentation by José Miguel Basset Blesa, chief inspector of Emergencies of the Provincial Consortium of Firefighters of Valencia, who analyzed the impact of the DANA that affected Valencia in October of last year and how the management of this extreme meteorological phenomenon was faced, exposing the main operational challenges and the actions of the response to this natural disaster.

Next, Néstor Padrón, deputy director of Civil Protection and Emergency Care of the Government of the Canary Islands, explained how the intervention of the Canarian device that was deployed in Valencia to help in emergency tasks after the passage of the DANA was organized, at a logistical and operational level.

The event culminated with a round table in which representatives of the Coordinating Center for Emergencies and Security (CECOES 112), the Canarian Emergency Service (SUC), Civil Protection and various fire consortia of the archipelago participated, where new coordination and action strategies in emergencies were discussed.
