The women's defense associations of Lanzarote, Mararía and Tiemar, denounced this Tuesday the cuts they have suffered from the administrations in the subsidies destined to carry out their projects, including those for the care of victims of gender violence.
These associations, which presented the events organized for International Women's Day by the Forum against gender violence, on March 8, pointed out that Mararía has not received the subsidy that the Canary Islands Institute for Equality used to grant and with which they carried out programs such as the Nueva Fénix project for care for victims of gender violence.
"This project was launched in November of last year and has been left without continuity," said Nieves Rosa Hernández, president of Mararía. This association has had to dismiss the contracted professionals and continue providing its services with volunteers.
For her part, Vicenta Monje, from Tiemar, stressed that the care centers for these women "if it were not for the associations, they would be lame since what the institutions contribute is not enough." She assured that the associations are going through a "very critical" moment.
Nor have the judicial resources contemplated in the Gender Violence Law improved, such as the creation of multidisciplinary teams to jointly assess cases of gender violence. These teams have not yet been created in the courts of the island.
Nieves Rosa Hernández pointed out, pending official data on the island on reports of gender violence, that these reports have increased and made a very positive assessment of this fact since "there is no more abuse because there are more reports." She pointed out as something worrying that many young people are repeating "archaic, macho and violent" patterns.
For his part, both the island director of the Government, Orlando Suárez, and the Minister of Social Welfare of the Cabildo, Marci Acuña, highlighted the importance of involving men and that "they position themselves radically against these situations." Acuña highlighted that this Thursday at 11:00 a.m. the manifesto 'Men of the Canary Islands for equality' will be read in the Cabildo.
In soccer fields
That same Thursday at 7:00 p.m., the Gender Violence Forum, which brings together associations, unions and public institutions, has called a concentration with an extraordinary artistic performance in the old Cabildo of Calle Real de Arrecife. All the municipalities of the island, the old Cabildo and the Government Delegation will wear a violet ribbon between March 3 and 25.
The events planned for this day are completed with three awareness events in the soccer fields of the island this weekend. They will be carried out on Friday in Teguise, on Saturday in Tahíche and on Sunday in the Sports City in the UD Lanzarote- Orientación Marítima match.
