The Vice President of the Government of the Canary Islands and Minister of Education, Universities and Sustainability, José Miguel Pérez, has officially inaugurated the IES of Costa Teguise, which began operating on January 28. Pérez has pointed out that this center significantly improves schooling in this Lanzarote municipality, which has seen its population grow in recent years.

The new center welcomes 186 students this year in 7 groups from IES Teguise, which had more than 800 students at the beginning of the current year. Next year it will also incorporate students who finish Primary Education at CEIP Costa Teguise, also recently built, which currently has an enrollment of 708 students in 31 groups.

"For this Ministry it is essential to cover the needs of educational infrastructures according to the real and updated demand. The loss of funds from the central government that we have suffered has been a setback, since the autonomous Executive does not have the capacity to respond to so much cut from Madrid, but we will not cease in the search for formulas to build the centers that are necessary in the Islands", José Miguel Pérez pointed out.

The vice president recalled that the Ministry made an investment in works and equipment of educational centers in Lanzarote of 395,802.35 euros during the past year and that this year it will carry out works of reforms, expansion, improvements and equipment in 13 centers of the island.

Pérez was accompanied, in the inaugural act, by the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Pedro San Ginés; the mayor of Teguise, Oswaldo Betancort; the vice-counselor of Education and Universities, Manuela Armas, and the director of the center, Nieves Hernández.
