Izquierda Unida has sent a statement clarifying that it remains at the table of the confluence of the progressive parties of Lanzarote, in which it only continues together with Podemos, according to its island coordinator, José Carballo, after the departure first of Alternativa Ciudadana and then of Somos Lanzarote. "We are not and will not be the ones who disloyally and dishonestly fail to comply with the agreements," the party said in reference to the agreement that Somos Lanzarote has finally closed with Nueva Canarias.
"Borja Rubio and his people have been the ones who have committed an outrage with the work of IU," said the island coordinator of Izquierda Unida, who said that from Somos "at no time" were they told that they were holding talks with NC.
"And in IU we have left our skin there, because a very large majority of the programmatic content that has been dealt with in the working groups of the confluence table has been contributed by IU. So, it is annoying at the very least," said the island coordinator of the party.
A political route "against fierce speculation"
In its statement, IU reiterates its "commitment to agreements that allow us to advance socially towards the fields of equality, solidarity, justice, sustainable development, as well as improve the quality of life of citizens" in the face of "internal dissensions that are being experienced in a certain number of political organizations."
"From the rigor of our work and the transparency in our relations with the rest of the political parties on the island, without personalism and with our own identity, Izquierda Unida Canaria Lanzarote wants to make its intention to give voice to the working class of Lanzarote in the next elections on May 26", adds the party, which claims to have been working "for many weeks" at the Mesa por la Confluencia "with zeal, enthusiasm and coherence" with its principles "to achieve a 'Framework Program Project' of the left and progressive for the island.
A program that IU says it feels "proud" of and that "opens new routes and perspectives of change in the fight against inequality and the quality of life of citizens." "A political route that opens other possibilities in Lanzarote against the fierce speculation and environmental degradation to which it is being subjected by those who use fallacy and demagogy in times of elections. A political route for the workers who live in precariousness and exploitation in their daily lives and workplaces. A political route for each and every one to access, without delay, with dignity to housing, education, health and social services," he adds.
"We are still talking" with Podemos
Thus, IU points out that it "continues to bet on agreements with all social and political groups that allow us to advance socially from equality and social justice." "Agreements with all those who live together on an island that is tolerant, supportive, feminist and inclusive, ecologist and respectful of all the inhabitants who constitute the wealth and multicultural diversity of this island," the formation points out, although at the confluence table "right now the two parties as such that are working are Podemos and IU", as Carballo has pointed out. And it must be remembered that Alternativa Ciudadana also abandoned it.
Regarding this pact with Podemos, the island coordinator of IU has pointed out that they are still "talking" and that, in fact, the purple formation has been summoned to a meeting this week, also to talk "urgently" about "everything that has happened."
"But in principle there is a pact, not written, not signed by the parties, so people can leave without any problem as Somos did, but there is the will even if there is nothing written," José Carballo pointed out. And "unequivocally, we have not been and will not be the ones who disloyally and dishonestly fail to comply with the agreements," IU has affirmed, which nevertheless has reiterated that it has its "own identity."
