“The island of Lanzarote aspires to become the first safe tourist destination in the world, integrating innovation and research, through a pioneering project at an international level in which scientific experts participate and has the backing of prominent entities of great prestige and recognized global solvency.” With these words, the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, defines the objective of the ‘Lanzarote Covid Safe’ project, which will start this weekend on the island.

The initiative has been promoted by the first Island Corporation through SPEL Turismo Lanzarote, and King’s College London, Alastria, IN2 and Continuam participate, "all of them entities and organizations of proven scientific and technological recognition", as highlighted by the Cabildo.

"From the first moment I was clear about it and since the beginning of the pandemic we have been working tirelessly from the Cabildo of Lanzarote to guarantee to the international tourism markets that Lanzarote is a safe island,” says Corujo, who defends her “firm commitment to place Lanzarote at the forefront as a pioneering safe destination internationally."

As part of this project that they define as "completely innovative", a total of 60 people will make up the pilot experience group that will stay at the Meliá Salinas Hotel and will arrive in Lanzarote next Friday, May 14 on different flights from the United Kingdom (London), Belgium (Brussels), the United Arab Emirates (Dubai) and Spain (Madrid, Basque Country, Barcelona, Valladolid) to participate in the proof of concept that will last 4 days, until Monday, May 17.

A team of scientists from King's College London is participating in the proof of concept, which will have the support of the company Biolab, a specialist partner in clinical analysis, Food and Environmental Safety and Hygiene, which will be responsible for analyzing all the samples derived from this proof of concept. In addition to the Meliá Hotels&Resorts chain, the Biolab laboratory, the car rental companies Cicar and the Art, Culture and Tourism Centers of the Cabildo de Lanzarote and the Iberia Express Company collaborate in this test.
