How many bottles of olive oil can a conejero buy per year if the fuel were subsidized?

The deputy of Lanzarote and La Graciosa for NC, Yoné Caraballo, reflects the reality of the people of Lanzarote "discriminated against by the bonus" of 20 cents

The deputy of Lanzarote and La Graciosa for Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-BC), Yoné Caraballo, wanted to reflect in the plenary session of the Parliament of the Canary Islands held this Tuesday, the reality that many conejeros live "when being discriminated against" in the 20 cents fuel bonus that is applied in the green islands.

Caraballo, who questioned the vice president of the Canary Islands and Minister of Economy, Industry and Commerce, the conservative Manuel Domínguez, showed the difference between a diesel payment ticket for an amount of 30 euros on the island of La Palma and another of a similar amount on the island of Fuerteventura, being in the first at 1.473 and on the island of Majorera at 1.479. All this, regardless of the income and purchasing power of who paid said amount.

“A businessman from La Palma, La Gomera or El Hierro is given a private fuel bonus without having economic problems to make ends meet, while the thousand-euroist from Lanzarote and Fuerteventura is forced to pay the most expensive gasoline in the Canary Islands”, explained Caraballo, who argued that this represents a “violation of the Statute of Autonomy of the Canary Islands that establishes the principle of equality between all Canarians”.

The Lanzarote deputy visualized the daily consequence of any resident of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura when lacking this bonus. Thus, he asked the vice president if he knew how many bottles of olive oil could be bought in a year if the people of Lanzarote and Majorca saved 20 cents per liter of fuel.

“A liter bottle of olive oil costs about 8.15 euros. If the bonus were applied, a Lanzarote resident could be saving about 240 euros per year on fuel. This represents 30 bottles of olive oil, a fundamental product for a healthy diet”, explained Yoné Caraballo.
