Gladys Acuña resigns as mayor of Yaiza after her conviction in Stratvs

Gladys Acuña has announced her decision to resign from her responsibility as mayor of Yaiza and renounce her position as councilor in the municipality after her conviction in the Stratvs case, as she states in a statement that she registered first thing this Monday morning at the City Hall. However, Acuña retains her seat as regional deputy, as indicated in the statement. Along with her, the Councilor for Urban Planning, José Antonio Rodríguez, also convicted in this case, has also submitted his resignation.

Acuña has informed, however, that she will appeal the sentence, made public last Friday, "with the firm purpose of proving her innocence" and that she will offer a press conference "this week" to assess the content of the same, including the dissenting vote, and present her management balance. Specifically, the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands has imposed on Acuña 14 years of disqualification, as well as the payment of a fine of 10,800 euros for a crime against land planning and another of prevarication by omission.

As for José Antonio Rodríguez, who was Councilor for Urban Planning with José Francisco Reyes, with whom the file was initiated to grant the activity license to Stratvs, he has been sentenced to seven years of disqualification for a crime of prevarication, also by omission like Acuña, considering the court that he should have taken measures against the winery and the rest of the Stratvs macro-complex facilities, since he was aware of its illegality.
