High temperatures and strong winds. A dangerous combination, especially in areas such as Famara. This weekend, the NGO EMERLAN (Emergencies and Rescue of Lanzarote) has had to intervene up to six times on this beach to rescue bathers who, after entering the sea, could not return to the shore. Although the number of actions is significant, none of those rescued needed subsequent medical assistance.
The last intervention occurred on Sunday, July 29, at around 11:30, when lifeguards rescued three minors aged sixteen, nine and eight, from Arrecife, who had moved away from the coast on a mattress and could not return to the shore.
On Saturday, July 28, they had to intervene on three occasions. First, at 14:52, they rescued two German tourists, father and son, who had moved away with the ebb tide. An hour later, they intervened to help a young Dutchman who had moved away with a surfboard and, unable to return to the shore, had abandoned the board, thus putting himself in "serious risk", EMERLAN points out. And finally, at 16:15, two young people of Colombian nationality who were using boogies (short board for catching waves) were trapped by the return current.
In addition, on Friday, July 27, the lifeguards on duty carried out two interventions almost in a row. The first of these occurred because two tourists of Italian nationality were trapped by the current and managed to warn the emergency services by means of signals. The second occurred for the same reason. However, when the lifeguards approached the young British man who was asking for help, they found him fatigued and in an obvious state of intoxication.
