The insular director of the General Administration of the State in Lanzarote, Pedro Viera, has highlighted this Tuesday the work of the National Police and the Civil Guard, emphasizing their professionalism, closeness to citizens, and effectiveness in solving crimes. Viera stressed that both bodies are fundamental to maintaining the island as a safe territory for residents and visitors.

Within the framework of the evaluation of the crime statistics for the third quarter of 2025, Pedro Viera held a meeting with members of the State Security Forces and Corps on the island, analyzing data, reviewing crime trends, and coordinating prevention and action measures.

A crime rate below the national average

Security indicators reflect the effectiveness of the forces in Lanzarote. The crime rate on the island is 46 offenses per 1,000 inhabitants, below the national average (50.9) and the Canary Islands average (48.3). Compared to 2017, crime has decreased by 6.2 points, and although it has risen slightly by 1.5 points compared to 2024, it remains below the regional and national averages.

Regarding the crime clearance rate, the Arrecife National Police Station reached 83% in October, and from January to September 2025, the overall percentage on the island was 63.2%, an increase of 0.9% compared to 2024.

The analysis by type of crime indicates that conventional crime, which represents 88.17% of total offenses, has increased by 8%, while cybercrime, which represents 11.82%, has decreased by 16.9% compared to the same period in 2024. Other crimes with notable decreases include burglaries (-15.3%), vehicle theft (-12.3%), and crimes against sexual freedom, which have fallen by 40.4%.

Regarding the police force on the island, the total number of National Police and Civil Guard officers amounts to 577, which represents an 8.3% increase compared to 2018, meaning 44 more officers. Both forces have recently incorporated trainees and carried out internal movements across different ranks.

Since 2018, the Ministry of the Interior has maintained replacement policies exceeding 100%, which has allowed for enhanced security throughout the territory. The 2025 Official Employment Offer (OEP), with 6,032 new positions nationwide distributed between the National Police and the Civil Guard, has made it possible to reverse the loss of almost 13,000 positions recorded between 2011 and 2017 under the Popular Party Government, ensuring the continuity of police presence and effectiveness on the island.

Lanzarote "continues to consolidate itself as a safe place," the Insular Directorate has highlighted, "thanks to the coordinated work of its State Security Forces and Corps and the constant evaluation and planning of its resources." Police surveillance, prevention, and effectiveness guarantee that citizens and visitors can enjoy the island with complete safety.
