The PSOE candidate for the presidency of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, has proposed to “rescue the concession to Canal Gestión Lanzarote and directly exploit the service of production, distribution and reuse of water by Inalsa.” The socialist has stated in a press release that she is “aware that it is not an easy task, but Canal Gestión is not up to the standards, not even close, of what is expected of it.”
For Loli Corujo, “it is evident that the losses in the distribution network are unacceptable, since more than half of the water that is produced is lost, and the water is also not reaching many homes fluently, so the service provided by the concessionaire company is very deficient.”
Strong boost to agricultural irrigation
Loli Corujo's purpose is to “give a strong boost to the water transport system throughout the island.” This system is based on five major lines: two to the north, one to Tinajo, another to Arrecife and Puerto del Carmen, and, finally, the line to the south. Of these, the southern one has already been renovated, while the northern one is under execution.
Another major socialist objective is agricultural irrigation. “Likewise, we will give a strong boost to agricultural irrigation throughout the island to strengthen agricultural production and advance in agricultural self-sufficiency.” In this sense, the desalination plant of La Santa will soon be a reality, which includes a wind turbine, pond and reservoir, and which would be the first specifically for agricultural supply on the island, for an amount of 14.4 million euros.
Treatment plants
In terms of sanitation, Dolores Corujo states: “We will significantly improve the sanitation networks throughout the island.” The Agreement signed with the state-owned company Aguas de las Cuencas de España SA for the integral renovation of the Treatment Plants of Arrecife and Tías, for 27 million euros, “will allow us to renovate the two main treatment plants on the island, which host a resident population of nearly 100,000 people.”
Stormwater network
Finally, the socialist candidate for president of the Cabildo maintains that she will accelerate the Stormwater Network “to solve once and for all the old problem of floods in the urban environment due to rains by executing the rainwater collection network.” In the rural environment, “we will redouble our efforts to combat the erosion produced by runoff.”
