Coalition Canaria demands that Costas urgently recover Playa Grande in the face of the threat of its "disappearance"

Two years have passed since the General Directorate of Coasts committed to carry out a regeneration and maintenance project of the emblematic Playa Gran de Tías and, according to Coalición Canaria, "to date nothing is known" and the beach is on its way to "disappearance". For this reason, the Nationalist Party will present a motion in the next plenary session of Tías to urge the Ministry of the Environment and Coasts to initiate the "project urgently".

"Time is running against the most emblematic beach in Lanzarote", warns CC, which recalls the meeting held in March 2006 between the General Directorate of Coasts and the mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz Saavedra. "There was even a subsequent plenary agreement in this regard".

However, they assure that so far the only thing there is is a "Study of the Coastal Dynamics on the Beaches of the Municipality of Tías" prepared by the Cedex (Center for Studies and Experimentation of Public Works) in August 2007, where it is concluded that in the period between 1960 and 1991, 16,000 square meters have been lost, that is, 16% of its surface, and between 1991 and 2005, 411 square meters have disappeared. "According to that study, 200 cubic meters of annual volume will continue to be lost, which translated into length would mean losing 4 or 5 meters of beach within thirty years", highlights CC.

Conclusions that for the opposition group mean that "the problem and the solution are recognized but no action is taken". "The same General Director of Coasts, José Fernández, declared that the best way to carry out the regeneration of the beaches is through the sediments themselves of the slope near the location of Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen, but until now it has only remained in words", accuses the nationalist party in relation to the attitude of the Ministry.

CC highlights the importance of this project, as it is a beach that is "the main natural tourist resource that the municipality has". "Our beaches are fundamental for any reconversion process of the tourist area, being the fundamental and differential resource of Puerto del Carmen", he argues. They understand therefore that "delaying the intervention in that Beach goes against the economic and tourist interests of the municipality".
