The President of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, celebrates the success of Canarian cinema in the nominations for the Goya Awards 2025, for the selection in the animation category of the productions Black Butterflies by David Baute, and Superklaus, from the Tenerife studio 3 Doubles, both financed by the Canary Islands Government; and the nomination of Valeria Castro for Best Original Song, On the Edge of the World, in the soundtrack of the feature film El 47, one of the favorite films.

For Clavijo, "the talent of our professionals is in luck with this triple nomination that fills us with pride, demonstrating that with creativity, determination and the effort of the producers and Canarian artists, they are managing to position themselves as a reference in the national and international arena, managing to connect with all types of audiences through their family and adventure themes or current affairs, such as climate change or the feeling of being nobody, a theme about which Valeria Castro sings."

Black Butterflies, directed by David Baute, is a traditional animation production that reflects on climate change and its devastating consequences. Its international premiere took place at the Annecy Festival (France), one of the most prestigious animation events in the world. Its first public screening in Spain was at the Sitges Film Festival and it has just won the Forqué Award for best animated feature film. In addition, it has been welcomed by the United Nations and by the Arab Film Critics Awards on European cinemas for its claim on the struggle of climate migrants.

Its production has been in charge of the Tenerife-based Tinglado Film, together with Ikiru Films, Anangu Grup and the Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals, in co-production with Tunche Films (Panama) and with the participation of Televisión Canaria, 3CAT and Mogambo. It has had the financial support of the Canary Islands Government after receiving a production subsidy in the 2021 call. It also has funding from the Spanish Film Institute, the Catalan Film Institute and the Tenerife Island Council. The Government organized its screening in Tenerife last November, and it is currently available in commercial cinemas.

For its part, Superklaus, is an adventure comedy for family audiences, directed by Andrea Sebastiá and the Canadian Steven Majaur, which has the production of the Tenerife animation studio 3 Doubles Producciones, one of the oldest in the islands, in co-production with Capitán Araña, Smartrek Films AIRE and PVP Media.

The film, which premiered at Sitges Familiy, has the participation of RTVE, RTVC, ICO and CREASGR, and with the financing of the ICAA and the European Union - Next Generation EU and the Government of the Canary Islands. It can also be seen currently in the cinemas of the islands.

Valeria Castro and more

The film El 47, by Marcel Barren has achieved a total of 14 nominations, including Best Original Song, On the Edge of the World, whose author is the singer from La Palma, Valeria Castro. It is the second time that the artist has been nominated for the Goyas, after competing last year with "El amor de Andrea", performed together with Vetusta Morla, for the homonymous film. In the words of the composer, "the song is that feeling of those who live in forgotten places, of those who carry a history, the weight of that oblivion and what surrounds it".

It should also be noted that the film Disco, Ibiza, Locomía, filmed partially in Tenerife, also competes for the Goya for Best Costume Design.
