The figures on accidents on roads and urban roads are chilling. Until November of last year in Lanzarote, 189 victims were registered in 631 accidents. Of these, the majority were slightly injured (120) and there were 15 deaths. On the other hand, it is worth noting that these incidents are the leading cause of death in the Spanish population under 39 years of age. On the other hand, 40% of the pedestrians who died were over 64 years of age.
Faced with these data, the Cabildo presented this morning the Island Plan for Road Safety Education. This year it will work with two population groups. Children to promote their training as future drivers and adults so that public spaces are adapted to their needs.
Projects
The project also has some specific objectives. The first is to raise awareness among the population of the risks of alcohol in driving any type of vehicle. The second is to promote the use of safety mechanisms among drivers. Thirdly, to transmit the importance of responsible and safe behavior on the road. Finally, the importance of not getting distracted while driving.
To carry out these purposes, several campaigns are proposed, some of which stand out for their novelty. In this case, it is the 'Move by Bike' days that will take place between the months of March and May for first-year ESO students. "It is about children riding bikes but following traffic rules," explained the Councilor for Youth, Sports and Road Safety, Francisca Toledo. Thus, they have asked the city councils to include bike lanes and other elements in their general plans to promote this practice.
Older people are also a group with serious dangers in their mobility. Thus, as they get older, their reaction and movement capacity is slower. For this reason, the Island Plan for Road Safety and Education 2006 also includes a program for these people to have the necessary information to self-assess their physical condition and select their road behaviors safely.
Other groups
The project also deals with a sector of the population as important as the group of disabled people. The objective of the program, which will be developed between the months of July and December, is to improve their circulation on the different roads as well as facilitate the instruments and tools that allow these people to acquire a greater degree of autonomy.
