The spokesperson for the Canarian Coalition in the Tías City Council, Mame Fernández, has proposed that a blue zone be established on Avenida de Las Playas, in Puerto del Carmen, in view of the elimination of parking spaces. The councilman recalled that with the remodeling of the avenue, which took place more than two years ago, they gained "in free spaces, large sidewalks for walking and even a bike lane", but "the worst" was to eliminate "a lane of traffic, which was reduced to a single one-way lane, and many parking spaces."
Mame Fernández pointed out that before facing this remodeling, Avenida de Las Playas had about 800 parking spaces, between the Hotel San Antonio and the Hotel Los Fariones. Currently, "more than half of these parking spaces have been lost".
"The deficit is such that currently in that same section there would only be about 300 spaces left, of which 100 are distributed in fords, bus stops, taxis, spaces for people with disabilities, pharmacies, for police vehicles, ambulances and emergencies, as well as loading and unloading areas." To improve this tourist area, the Canarian Coalition proposes that the possibility of projecting a blue zone be studied, which "seeks a rotation of vehicles and facilitates parking, both for residents and visitors".
"Many businesses have had to close"
"CC does not want to cause disruption to the residents of the area, but we have to be aware that business owners of shops, bars and restaurants have been diminished and many have had to close their doors and lay off workers, due to the deficit of visitors, users and consumers for not being able to park on Avenida de Las Playas, nor having a parking lot where they can leave their vehicle," said Mame Fernández.
For all these reasons, he has asked the government group to "look for solutions to the problem", "if it really wants to give dynamism to the tourist area" and activate the economy of the same with "actions that serve to continue keeping all businesses open and can maintain jobs."
Fernández has presented this motion to be debated in the next plenary session of the Tías City Council. In it, he also demands that this proposal be analyzed with the affected sectors, so that "it is not a unilateral decision of the government." "That the unanimous decision be made as to whether or not it is convenient for everyone," he said.
