The Nationalist Group (CC-PNC) in the Arrecife City Council has regretted that the government group rejected in the last Plenary the motion in which it was proposed to reduce the Festivities item by 650,000 euros to install protective screens in the schools of Arrecife, as a security measure against Covid-19 in classrooms.
“Sincerely, we thought that given the seriousness of the situation we are experiencing, the government group would be much more sensitive and receptive to our proposals. When we talk about the safety of our schoolchildren, we cannot be thinking about parties or hiding behind the powers or bureaucracy to look the other way, which is what this government continually does”, says the spokesperson for CC-PNC, Echedey Eugenio.
The nationalists explain that the measure they are proposing has already been carried out in other municipalities such as El Rubio (Seville) or, without leaving the Canary Islands, in Gáldar, where they point out that the PSOE did approve it, or in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. “If these municipalities have done it, Arrecife can also perfectly assume the cost. We gave them the solution for the 12,000 schoolchildren in the capital, we told them where to get the money from, but their response was simply that it is the responsibility of the Government of the Canary Islands, which is not true. Truly regrettable”, emphasizes the councilor.
And Eugenio does not understand "how it is possible that if even the Cavalcade of Kings is suspended, the Festivities item has been increased in the 2020 budgets instead of allocating that money to much more necessary issues such as extreme measures to avoid contagion within classrooms".
“We have done a market study, it is 50 or 60 euros for each of these protective screens, there is money in Festivities and all that is needed to use it is a budget modification or a decree from the Mayor. But of course, to be able to do it, you must first want to and it seems that for this government group the priorities are different”, asserts the spokesperson for CC-PNC.
