Carmen Steinert calls for calm regarding the report of mistreatment at the foreign minors center in Arrecife

The General Director of Child and Family Protection, Carmen Steiner, has called for calm in Lanzarote society following the [complaint made public this Tuesday by three immigrant groups->22755], who claim that some workers at the foreign minors' detention center in Arrecife mistreat children.

Steinert announces the opening of an informative file to clarify the facts "from the presumption of innocence of workers who have more than demonstrated in recent years their commitment to the reception, care, and integration of these children."

"We understand that the reported facts are very serious, hence the need to confirm them, since if they are true they are, as I have already said, very serious, but if they are not, we are talking about an attack on the dignity of people, hence our concern to clarify the reported facts, as quickly as possible, in parallel with the investigation opened by the Prosecutor's Office," she stated in a press release.

"Lanzarote society has demonstrated over more than ten years its capacity for solidarity, integration, and its willingness to develop in a multicultural community, and now is the time to demonstrate our serenity in the face of these complaints," Steinert pointed out.

In this regard, she adds that "it must be taken into account that in these years Lanzarote has welcomed almost a thousand children who arrived through illegal immigration from the African continent. This task has been difficult, and has been very complicated at times, but work has been done to integrate African children, so we must not lose our confidence in the system, nor our capacity for integration, which has been widely demonstrated."
