Caraballo lashes out at the Canary Islands for failing to comply with the construction of social housing in Lanzarote

The deputy rejects the "Maneje Operation" in Arrecife to "give away public land to businessmen and have them manage social rentals"

The deputy of Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-bc) for Lanzarote and La Graciosa and island president of the formation, Yoné Caraballo, has strongly attacked the Government of the Canary Islands by denouncing “the institutional neglect” in terms of social housing on the island. “Lanzarote is being shamefully ignored by a Government that has proven incapable of responding to a very serious housing emergency,” he stated.

Caraballo has accused the Executive of the Canarian Coalition (CC) and Popular Party (PP) of “selling smoke with empty promises”, while the families of Lanzarote "remain trapped in unaffordable rents, evictions and a total lack of public alternatives." “They promised us promotions, plans, budgets. Today, all we have is non-compliance and delays in what was already planned in the last legislature, since the mayor of Arrecife himself recognizes that the Government of the Canary Islands will not comply in this term with the 400 homes in Maneje.”

The parliamentarian recalled that, "despite the fact that the Government of Progress approved the Housing Plan 2020-2025, this conservative Executive has not laid a single stone for new public housing on the island." “Where is the promised investment? Where is the housing for Arrecife, San Bartolomé or Tías?”, questioned the Canarian, who pointed out that “this Government is absent. There is no political will, no leadership, no respect for the residents of Lanzarote. We are tired of promises and headlines that do not translate into homes for those who need them most.”

"Maneje Operation"

Yoné Caraballo has categorically rejected the "intention of the Arrecife government group of the PP and CC to use the inefficiency of the Government of the Canary Islands as an excuse" to “give away” public land to private developers, and that they manage social rentals for 75 years.

This measure, Caraballo points out, “is one more of the neoliberal and mercantilist vision that both the PP and CC are implementing. Giving away the little public land we have left and neglecting the protection of families who need public institutions the most.”

“What would have happened if the public housing in Arrecife such as the Yellow Apartments, Los Geranios, Los Alonso or the 100 homes in Argana Alta had been managed by private companies instead of by public institutions? Do you think that the owners of these homes would have been protected from price increases and even evictions as has happened in Madrid or Fuerteventura who have had to leave their homes for life?”, Caraballo asked, who sees an “immorality that the Arrecife government group intends to leave the new residents of these social homes helpless.”

“We are going to fight for the Government of the Canary Islands to comply with Lanzarote and build social public housing, in addition to capping rental prices in the free market, and guarantee the right to decent housing. We oppose those who always do business at the expense of our rights,” said Yoné Caraballo.
