The Ministry of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands has opened the deadline to apply for grants for official university degree and master's degree studies, valid throughout the national territory, in public universities of the islands or the rest of Spain, corresponding to the 2022-2023 academic year.
The publication of this call in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC), which took place this Monday, has been brought forward compared to previous courses, when it took place in the months of September or October, with the aim that students can have these grants as soon as possible.
In addition, there will be a longer period to apply for them, since the application period will begin on July 19 and end on September 5.
These grants are endowed with 10.5 million euros distributed in the annuity of this year (three million) and that of 2023 (the remaining 7.5 million). Its purpose is to "meet the needs of university students according to the socio-economic and academic circumstances of each moment; cover expenses derived from transportation, payment of public prices, material and books of those who wish to carry out or are carrying out university studies; and eliminate restrictions regarding the geographical location of the centers in which applicants are studying, in accordance with the new mobility framework for students of the Spanish university system".
Requirements and novelties
Thus, lower academic requirements are established and certain income thresholds are raised with respect to the grants of the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training. The complementarity of the grants of the Government of the Canary Islands over those of the State materializes in the fact that the students who meet the requirements of this call, but not those of the state call, which are more demanding, will be beneficiaries of the former.
As a novelty, for the 2022/2023 academic year, the autonomous grants cover the first, second, third and fourth enrollments in Engineering, Architecture and Science studies, and for the rest of the teachings they cover the first, second and third enrollments. In the previous call, it was necessary to wait until the end of the ordinary procedure and if there was a budget left over, a proposal was submitted to the Selection Committee for the granting of third and/or fourth enrollments.
In view of the experience acquired in previous calls, in which 100% has been achieved in electronic processing, this call will also be managed through the total digitization of applications with the telematic presentation of these, except in exceptional situations.
Therefore, the applicant students must have an electronic signature, which they will use in this process, so they can carry out all the procedures without leaving their home or place of study. The application form can be downloaded from the website of the General Directorate of Universities and in the Electronic Headquarters of the Government of the Canary Islands.
Applications that do not complete the telematic presentation process will not be taken into account, which includes obtaining the Entry Registration Receipt, a document that must be kept by the applicant to prove, if necessary, the presentation of their application in the established time and manner.
Regarding the aid established for university students with functional diversity, the bases of the call establish that the additional amounts vary depending on the degree of disability; 600 euros in the case of a disability between 33 and 49%; 900 euros if it ranges between 50 and 65%, and 1,500 euros for applicants who exceed 65%. In addition, if a degree of disability greater than 65% and a level of dependence of grade III, level 2 is recognized, the amount is 2,300 euros.
On the other hand, insularity implies an additional economic effort for families residing in the Canary Islands, which particularly affects those who reside in non-capital islands. For this reason, a differentiated treatment is contemplated for applicants who must carry out their university studies on islands other than their island of residence or in the Peninsula.
