The General Assembly of Somos Lanzarote has elected Borja Rubio, current Spokesperson of the organization in Arrecife, as a candidate for the Parliament of the Canary Islands. The endorsement took place this Thursday at its headquarters, and had the unanimous support of all those present.
Born in Arrecife de Lanzarote in 1990, where he spent his youth, being a student at the Nieves Toledo school and the IES Blas Cabrera. In 2008 he began a double degree in Law and Political Science at the University of Granada, which he finished in 2013. At the end, he studied Democracy and Public Decisions, and began a Master's Degree in Human Rights with a specialty in disability from the UNED. He has participated in various social causes, such as student rights and the fight against oil exploration. In 2015 he decided to head the Somos Lanzarote list for the Arrecife City Council, an institution where the formation obtains its best quantitative results with three councilors. At the beginning of 2016 he was elected as Political Secretary of Somos Lanzarote until 2018, where he assumed the Organization Secretariat until now.
In his speech to the members of Somos Lanzarote, Borja Rubio thanked them for the trust placed in him, and said he felt "full of energy and eager for there to be a clearly Lanzarote voice in the Parliament of the Canary Islands this legislature."
Likewise, Borja Rubio said he was convinced that "it is more important than ever that the Somos Lanzarote project, which is the only political formation of island obedience with a presence in the island's institutions, continues to grow with the aim of defending the island and its demands both in Lanzarote and in the Parliament of the Canary Islands," said Rubio.
Finally, Borja Rubio considered that "we have the responsibility of putting Lanzarote and La Graciosa back at the center of the political map of the Archipelago, of substantially increasing the weight of our island in the Canary Islands. I am convinced that forces like Somos Lanzarote depend on the fact that in 2019 there will be a Government of the Canary Islands that rebalances the inequalities between the islands, and that works for the construction of a more just, cohesive, feminist, egalitarian, and social Canary Islands."
"I will work to break the historical debt that the Government of the Canary Islands, governed for almost three decades by Coalición Canaria, has with Lanzarote and La Graciosa, and which is evident in the absence of resources in health, education or social services," Rubio continued.
Finally, he stated that "my candidacy is that of all those who aspire to a change of political cycle in the Canary Islands in this year 2019, which opens a new era of policies of progress, balance and regeneration, which improves the lives of the people of Lanzarote and all the Canarians."
